The pedestrian centre starts at place de Jaude and climbs to the cathedral. Volvic stone gives it a black colour that no other cathedral in France has. Climb the Bayette tower if it is open: from up there the Chaîne des Puys lines up its volcanoes above the roofs.

The square covers 27,800 m² and two bronzes face each other across it. To the north, Vercingetorix on horseback, unveiled in 1903, by the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The same man made the Statue of Liberty, and almost nobody walking past knows it. To the south, General Desaix, a local son, placed there in 1848.
Ten minutes on foot from the cathedral, the basilica is built in arkose from Montpeyroux, a pale sandstone. The contrast with the lava of the rest of the city is plain to the eye. It dates from the 1120s and its east end is among the best preserved in Auvergne Romanesque. Go down to the crypt: the Black Virgin venerated there is 31 centimetres tall and dates from 1734.
Clermont and Montferrand were rival towns, merged by force in 1630. Montferrand kept its grid plan, its round central square and its 15th and 16th century townhouses, three kilometres from the centre. You can walk it without crowds, which never happens on rue des Gras on a Saturday. The Roger-Quilliot art museum occupies the former Ursuline convent.
The Amboise fountain, on place Olympe-de-Gouges, was cut from Volvic stone between 1511 and 1515 for bishop Jacques d'Amboise. It moved four times before settling there. And if you are driving, L'Aventure Michelin, 32 rue du Clos Four, tells the story of the tyre since 1889 across 2,000 m², with a Breguet 14 aircraft and a railcar in the hall.
You can see the volcano from town, but the railway station is 15 km out and the climb takes half a day. Sleeping here puts you at the train in the morning, instead of setting off from Paris or Lille at dawn.
