Cluny Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Cluny, France. Founded on September 11, 910 (or 909) by William I the Pious, Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Auvergne, it stood as a symbol of monastic renewal in the Middle Ages—a beacon for Benedictine reform and a premier center of intellectual life. Much of the monastery's original architecture still stands today, protected as a historical monument and operated as a public site by France's Center for National Monuments. The ancient abbey has earned European Heritage status.
