The Cité de Carcassonne is a magnificent medieval architectural ensemble nestled in the French city of Carcassonne, in the Aude department of the Occitanie region. Perched on the right bank of the Aude, it overlooks the modern city to the southeast. This fortified medieval citadel, whose origins stretch back to the Gallo-Roman period, has earned its renown through its impressive double ramparts—stretching nearly 3 kilometers and punctuated by fifty-two towers—which command the Aude valley below. Within the Citadel stand a castle (the Château Comtal) and a basilica (the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire).
